Magdala is the Aramaic name for a town on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee. (The body of water also is known as Lake Galilee or Lake Tiberias). The Hebrew name for Magdala is often rendered in English as "Migdal" or "Migdol." This is the town where Mary Magdalene was either born, raised, or both. Her name literally means "Mary of Magdala."
